Grasslands, Timber and Fire. A Symposium

from 14 to 15 October 2009 in Bishopstowe, Pietermaritzburg

The SANBI National Grasslands Programme and the Grassland Society of Southern Africa are proud to host a symposium focusing on improving our understanding of the ecology and management of grasslands, and their related ecosystems, that are associated with timber plantations. A central theme is fire behaviour, fire ecology, and fire management.

Organising Committee

Justin du Toit

Justin du Toit is a lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. His research interest is rehabilitation ecology, with a focus on reintroducing locally extinct grass species to degraded grasslands. He is a council member of the Grassland Society of Southern Africa, and a member of the Forestry Task Team of the SANBI Grasslands Programme. He has a keen interest in scientific knowledge transfer, and has been the organiser and host of various information days, symposia, and workshops.

Steve Germishuizen

Steven Germishuizen is the forestry coordinator for the Grasslands Programme and works under the administration of Forestry South Africa. An environmental consultant based in KZN, most projects have been in the grassland biome with a focus on environmental management within the forestry industry, and biodiversity conservation and ecosystem integrity. He has been involved with forestry at scales from community based forestry to large corporate entities. He was a member of the FSC’s plantations review expert team dealing with ecosystem integrity.

Freyni du Toit

Freyni du Toit has been the administrator of the Grassland Society of Southern Africa since 2001. She has organised the annual congress of the Grassland Society of Southern Africa since 2006, as well as many other workshops and symposia.
